| Referees A top Sevens Tournament such as the Amsterdam Sevens needs top referees. Also, because the Amsterdam Sevens is one of the most international Sevens tournaments in the world we want to reflect this in the referees. To ensure the tournament gets top referees from a wider spread of countries we are changing our procedures. The Referees Development Officer of the Dutch Rugby Union will be playing a prominent role to ensure the quality. Part of the new process is to invite referees to contact us if they want to referee at the Amsterdam Sevens. The number of places is limited and preference will be given to the best qualified referees and referees from countries that are under-represented. | About the Amsterdam Sevens. The Amsterdam Sevens was started in 1972 by a group of enthusiasts from AAC rugby club in Amsterdam with 12 teams. The first winners were Walsall. The tournament grew to become an integral part of the Rugby Calendar with a 60 team format. From 2004 the Ladies Sevens, which had been running as a separate tournament, became part of the Amsterdam Sevens party and we now have a 16 team Ladies tournament. From 2006 we added a Veterans 10s tournament in a (successful) attempt to increase beer sales and it has now grown to a successful 16 team tournament. The Amsterdam Sevens is still run by members of AAC and friends in their spare time, a Club Sevens on Steroids, but the organization is anything but amateur. The tournament has become one of the top attractions on the rugby calendar. The tournament attracts top sevens teams from around the world, including national teams, and is one of the most international tournaments in the world. Ony in Amsterdam will you see Zimbabwe play against Moldova or a Ladies Team from Kazakhstan play against the Finish national team. The tournament is usually held on the last but one weekend in May – the 2010 tournament will be held over the weekend of 22ndand 23rd of May.
